Linseed
Linseed is high in oils and proteins as well as being nutritious. It can be fed in a number of ways. One of the important things to remember is that linseed must be cooked properly because if it is fed raw it is poisonous to horses but when cooked it improves your horses coat and condition.
Is it worth the effort, well yes your horse will look good and often you can find Linseed cake in a course mix brought for you horse. If you are not sure what that looks like they are the little rectangular dark brown pieces that you will often find in the mix.
One of the ways it can be fed to you horse in as a linseed jelly. To do this you need to soak the linseed overnight in cold water, make sure you use plenty of water if it soaks all the water up add more. After soaking overnight make sure it has plenty of water and boil for a good 15 minutes. Then it needs to simmer for a minimum of 3 hours. The longer you can cook it the better it is. Remember to keep checking the water level and you are looking for it to turn into a jelly. Once cooked, leave to cool until it reaches blood temperature, and then mix it your horses feed. You should be looking to feed between 6oz and 1lb depending on the size of your horse.
Even if this does seem a lot of bother you might find that if your horses coat is looking dull and lifeless this might be the answer you are looking for.
